Eager to try them out, I decided to go ahead with the M&S milk chocolate I had in the house.
Now it's key you learn from my mistake here and use the right chocolate. That is unless you fancy making a molten sucrose mess - so sweet that teeth could fall out on impact.
Unfortunately it had to go straight in the bin. The burnt sugary smell was so pungent, i swear i was inhaling calories.
So time for round two, I was again super keen to conquer the brownie but i couldn't find the unsweetened chocolate in our local Tesco and instead opted for 73% cacao.
To compensate for my sugary chocolate, I reduced the amount of sugar i used and increased the flour, and then crossed my fingers.
Once cooled I cut it into squares. It was at that point I realised my middle was still a little gooey... DAMN IT!
Instead of chucking it away, I decided to try and save things by taking away the cooked squares and popped the rest back in the oven.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained!
This turned out to be my favourite bit... so if this happens to you - DON'T throw it away.
I believe a good gage of brilliant baking is how quickly it disappears and between our small team of 6, all squares had been gobbled by 4pm. So it was a success for me! Yay!
Please give them a go, the right way, or my way, and let me know how you get on!
All gone! |
230g unsalted butter [I used margarine]
140g unsweetened chocolate, 100% cacao [i used 73%]
4 eggs
450g caster sugar [I used approx 400g]
3 tsp vanilla extract
115g plain flour [& I used about 140g]
1. Preheat the oven to 200 C/Gas Mark 6. Grease and flour a 9 x 12 inch baking tin [I used baking paper and used the first square tin I could find. Measurements confuse me!]
2. Melt the butter and chocolate together in a saucepan on a low heat. Keep stirring and don't let it burn. When melted set aside to cool to room temperature.
3. Beat the eggs and sugar until thick. Add vanilla extract.
4. Fold in the cooled choc and butter into the eggs and sugar. Mix together. Sift the flour and fold into the batter [I didn't sift btw] Mix well.
5. Pour the mixture into the baking tin. Bake for 5 mins at Gas Mark 6/ 200 C . Turn the oven down to 180 C/ Gas Mark 4 and bake for 20 mins.
6. Let the brownies cool in the tin before cutting into squares.
7. EAT!!!
After writing this I realised I'm not very good at following instruction, ha ha oh well, they tasted good, that's the main thing!
Enjoy x
